AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.) decided to step into the blockchain gaming space after failing at succeeding in the cryptocurrency mining equipment business earlier. It is true that the blockchain technology is blooming now and can be implemented pretty much everywhere, therefore, maybe that is a pretty smart move after all.

AMD decided to collaborate with the BGA (Blockchain Game Alliance), which is already managing gaming giants like Ubisoft and ConsenSys which is a current Ethereum development studio. AMD’s spokespeople proclaimed that they want to provide the industry with the “high-performance computing technologies” that might “potentially transform the way games are created, published, purchased and played.”

Among other partners, AMD is now working with we can point out the blockchain-based gaming marketplaces like Robot Cache and Ultra. Notably, both of those will utilize AMD-produced Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards which are supposed to improve cryptographic computing performance.

Head of blockchain technology at AMD, Joerg Roskowetz, said:

Blockchain technology brings broader choice, security, and flexibility to both gamers and publishers. Next-generation blockchain game platforms will give gamers access to exclusive online content, and provide new ways for them to truly own it.

Previously AMD was betting high on cryptocurrency mining equipment manufacturing, which raised $1.65 billion, which accounted for approximately 10% of Q1 2018 revenue. Later, throughout the next two quarters, the revenue generated by this business fell drastically before disappearing completely in the fourth quarter of 2018.

In 2019, during the third quarter, AMD got $1.80 billion of revenue that was driven by the computing and graphics segment solely.

President and CEO of AMB, Lisa Su, mentioned:

Our first full quarter of 7nm Ryzen, Radeon and EPYC processor sales drove our highest quarterly revenue since 2005, our highest quarterly gross margin since 2012 and a significant increase in net income year-over-year.

Now, when AMD’s attention was majorly switched to the blockchain gaming industry, the company is planning to dedicate even more effort for the creation of new blockchain-powered applications, services, use cases. The company’s salespeople stated:

AMD is in a unique position to offer the best combination of high-performance CPUs [central processing units] and GPUs [graphics processing units] for demanding blockchain workloads.
